The story revolves around a powerful artificial intelligence called “The Entity”, which has gone rogue and poses a global threat. It can infiltrate any digital system, manipulate data, and make it nearly impossible to distinguish truth from lies. Every major power wants control of it.
To gain access to the Entity, one must possess a special two-part key—the only thing that can unlock its core, which is hidden deep in a sunken Russian submarine named Sevastopol, lost at the start of the film after being sabotaged by the Entity itself.
Ethan Hunt and his team (Benji, Luther, and Ilsa) are tasked with recovering the key and ensuring it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Ethan, however, decides the Entity must be destroyed rather than controlled, putting him at odds with world governments.
Along the way, Ethan crosses paths with:
Grace, a skilled pickpocket drawn into the chaos after stealing half of the key.
Gabriel, a mysterious and ruthless agent of the Entity with a dark past linked to Ethan’s earlier life.
Ilsa Faust, Ethan's ally and love interest, who also possesses one half of the key.
As Ethan’s team races across the globe—from desert gunfights to a tense train sequence in the Alps—they suffer losses (including the apparent death of Ilsa), make new alliances, and get closer to discovering the truth about the Entity’s origin and its devastating potential.
The film ends on a cliffhanger: Ethan finally retrieves both halves of the key, but the location of the Entity's core—inside the sunken submarine—is only just revealed. The mission is far from over.
